More Than Flowers: A Conversation on Meaningful, Holistic Floristry

ree

When people think of flowers, they often think of beauty, and rightfully so. But for me, flowers have always held something deeper: meaning, emotion, connection. In this post, I’m sharing more about what drives my floral practice, how I work with clients, and what it means to approach floristry from a holistic perspective.

What inspired you to start your floral business, and what drew you specifically to a more holistic approach to floristry?

I’ve always felt drawn to the beauty and symbolism of flowers. I believe that a connection to nature is vital to the human experience, and sharing that connection—especially through flowers—felt like a meaningful way to serve my community.

What does holistic floristry mean to you in practice?

To me, holistic floristry means engaging with flowers in a way that invites a relationship between the client and their flowers. It involves symbolism, ritual, intentional design, and sustainable practices. Flowers are chosen not just for beauty, but for the emotions they evoke and the meaning they carry. This naturally leads to a more organic, wild, and bespoke style of design.

How do you guide clients through that experience, especially if they’re new to this approach?

I like to get to know my clients on a deeper level—what inspires them, what stories they want to tell. I’ll ask questions about colors, textures, and feelings that reflect who they are. From there, everything becomes part of the ritual: from sourcing flowers to selecting each bloom with care, to bringing it all together in a way that tells a story.

What do you hope clients feel when they receive your flowers or walk into a space you've designed?

I want them to light up. I want them to feel joy—or whatever emotion their flowers are meant to evoke. I want them to feel connected to what they’ve chosen, and to know it wasn’t just a pretty arrangement, but something that carries meaning.

How does sustainability factor into your work?

Sourcing sustainably is an important part of what I do. I prioritize working with local growers and using U.S.-grown flowers whenever possible. If something isn’t in season, I’ll find similar blooms that preserve the look and feel of the design. I also avoid floral foam in my work because of its negative environmental impact.

What would you say to someone who’s unsure about what they want or doesn’t feel “floral enough” to reach out?

You don’t need to have it all figured out. I love helping clients shape their ideas, even if they’re unsure where to start. Usually, we begin with a color palette or a general mood, and go from there. My role is to make the process easy and creative, not overwhelming.

For someone who’s considering working with you, what would you want them to know?

Working with me isn’t just about flowers—it’s about connection. I value building relationships and learning who my clients are. Then, I translate that into floral design. My hope is that clients leave not only with something beautiful, but with a new way of seeing and connecting with flowers.
